The Functions of Panels

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

For those interested in these sorts of things, I have a new video podcast posted to my site called “The Functions of Panels: Frames and Flow.”

This one is about the various functional roles that panels play in the visual language used in comics. Among the topics I hit are:
• focusing information within panels
• navigating page layouts
• visual “storytelling”
• text-image relationships

As always, I welcome any and all feedback you might have, either directly to me or on my blog. Enjoy!

Best,

Neil

Sign of the Times, Indeed

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

With its midcentury-Soviet stylings and coloration, not to mention its eerie messaging, this poster, reportedly from outside a London Metro station, looks like something right out of V for Vendetta or Judge Dredd. The last time I was in London, hanging out on the seedier side of town amongst the teensy porno bookshops and such (I walked into one and told the owner, “I thought it would be bigger,” and he said, “You have a bigger economy,” just like that, without a pause), I was creeped out by all the cameras around. I’d like to think it’s just a London thing, but I suspect that here in the US we’re just better at hiding them, and less frank about their usage.
